Today (1/20) we went to Centennial Plaza in Midland, TX and Welcomed the former President and Mrs. Bush home. It was a really unique experience, one that I will never get to do again. We enjoyed every minute of it, well maybe a little less time standing. But you know it was really an experience I will never be able to be a part of again. Conor waiving his Texas flag with pride! Sporting my Texas Flag, my big W and my AZ Cardinals! We stood there for 4 1/2 hours. Surprisingly Conor did really well considering the circumstances. These banners where everywhere...Lee Greenwood, "I'm Proud to be an American" sang.
The Gatlin Brothers were there. I really didn't know any of their songs except "All the Gold in California". They are from this area, grew up in Odessa. They are really good friends with The Bush family. They are really funny and that made them really entertaining.
Conor was wanting to fit in so he put his "Hollywood's"on! Then my favorite...Rodney Atkins came and sang "These are my people, "Watching you" and "Its America". I have to say that performance was my favorite.
About this time Conor fell asleep...it was way time!!The MC gets on the mike and says that George wants to see the crowd and they have routed the plane to fly over us and to give him a Big Texas welcome home. It was such a surreal moment seeing that big ol' bird fly over us, it seemed like it was just inches above the buildings. WE all had "W" and we waved those and waved our flags. It was really pretty neat, it gave me chills. So then we waited while they landed and drove over to our little plaza where 30,000 had crammed in to await the arrival of "Midland's rising son". And then they finally made it home....Then he started his speech...

You know, being an American is something I sometimes take for granted. Standing there in that plaza with those thousands of people I was so happy to be called an American. There are going to be many presidents in the White House...there are going to be many times we don't agree with what they do and say. But standing there in the presence of the man George W Bush I was overwhelmed with the amount of pressure he had to deal with, the attacks on 9/11, the Katrina Hurricane in New Orleans, the war in Iraq, the state of the economy. Wow! What pressure for on man to try and fix. He said he was going to wake up the next morning and make coffee for Laura, read the paper, feed and walk the dogs, and that would all happen before 7am. He said he made it through the last eight years witht he support of his family. He said he was going to write a book to try and let people understand what it is like in the oval office. They have some good ideas for some charity work they are looking at.

One thing is for sure....I walked away from there with a new respect of the man George W. Bush.

Okay, soooo super jealous! My parents love the Gatlin Brothers and I've seen them live too! And um, I may or may not have a little crush on Rodney Atkins (and my dad LOVES his Going Through Hell song)! How neat to see Pres. Bush fly over you and then to hear him speak--crazy! So glad you got to experience that!:)

I am so jealous!! You are so lucky to have been there. I saw the speech on FOX News and I even cried. You can tell he is a good person who only tried to do what he felt was right. I got to see him when he came to Phoenix twice during the 2004 elections and it was amazing. I will definitely miss him.

Wow, it looks like you had a great time! I don't think I'd be able to stand that long. I would leave. Fast. But I'm glad you had the fortitude to hold out. I think Bush was a great man and will never get the credit for the good things he's done for this country.
